Master class workshops FESTIVAL FARMA 2007
VOICE – BODY – RHYTHM
MARIANA SADOVSKA – Polyphonic singing from the Ukraine
May 26 – 27, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. rehearsal space at ©vandovo theatre
For many years already, Mariana Sadovska has been leading workshops focused on the so called „white voice“ (open throat) drawing from the East-European tradition. Based on her experiences with the Polish theatre Gardzienice she developed a system of exercises enabling to discover the bonds between movement and singing, gesture and voice, rhythm and breath. She looks for the essence of every song and strives for a true expression, as well as stimulates imagination: She acquaintances us with rituals, social origins and basis of everyday life contained in the individual songs – e.g. calling songs, wedding songs, lullabys, ballads and healing songs.
DULSORI – Korean rhythms „Jang-dan“ and „So-ri“
May 28-29, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Portheimka park or rehearsal space at ©vandovo theatre
During the workshops the Dulsori drummers work with the traditions of Korean ritual ceremonies. With the help of rhythm (Jang-dan) and songs (So-ri) they illuminate the spirit of Korean culture. They use four percussion instruments, Gwaengghari, Janggoo, Buk and Jing, representing thunder and lightning, rain, cloud and wind. On those, the Korean farmers imitated the sounds of nature, celebrating in this manner the elementary natural forces.
JAVIER CURA – Contact improvisation
May 30-31, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. rehearsal space at ©vandovo theatre
Movement can be imagined as a dynamic combination of centripetal and centrifugal forces. The work with these forces and their physical and emotional understanding causes a fluid state of constant change. Tango and contact improvisation are two energizing, instinctive dance forms. Javier Cura fuses the elements of both, and thus enriches and liberates the physical expression. From tango he borrows the principles of rhythm, from contact improvisation the conscious use of centripetal and centrifugal forces and the ability to establish unlimited, unschemed relations with the partner. The objective of the stage is to reach to an improvised dance of great clarity of form and free, dynamic expression.

The premiéres of documentary films and prof. Leszek Kolankiewicz´s lectures - Admission free
The dramaturgy of the festival presents the creative method of the guest artists not only through master class workshops, but also through the premiéres of documentary films by Slovak directors about their search and the origins of the individual projects. The events of each festival day are thematically interwoven – from the morning workshop through the film projection to the evening performance. The films are commented upon by prof. Leszek Kolankiewicz´s „brief action lectures“ (he is one of the leading personalities of today´s reflexion about theatre and culture in Europe).
All the lectures and films will touch upon the connections with the focus of the festival: An expression crossing over the genre boundaries. This is also the title of a key lecture by prof. Kolankiewicz, which will be delivered on May 30 from 5 to 6.30 p.m. at the ©vandovo theatre´s café.
Prof. Leszek Kolankiewicz. Culturologist, theatre anthropologist, critic, author; in the years 1973 – 1982, he co-operated with Jerzy Grotowski and his theatre Laboratorium in Wroclaw and was the editor and chief editor of his numerous texts. He is the director of the Institute for Polish Culture at Warsaw University and the head of its theatrical and spectacle department; he also lectures at the department of theatre science at the Theatrical Academy in Warsaw. He is a member of the committee for science at the Polish Academy of Science, vice-chairman of the Polish Culturological Society, and since 1992, member of a professional board at the International School of Theatre Anthropology ISTA, a travelling university of theatrical professionals residing at Odin Teatret in Holstebro, Denmark. He is a member of a programme council for the advisory board at Grotowski´s Centre in Wroclaw.
In 1999, he published a book Forefather's Eve: The Dead Feast's Theatre, where – in connection with the Polish cultural heritage – he analyzes different forms of the cult of the dead as a bridge with the invisible world of our ancestors; the theme of a theatre as an initiatng extension of the given penetrated also his previous books: Samba with Gods. An Anthropological Tale, 1995 and Saint Artaud, 1988. The critics agree that today´s thought about the theatre cannot do without the anthropological context offered by Kolankiewicz´s books.
„Kolankiewicz´s Anthropology of the Theatre examines the behaviour of man in everyday´s stage situations; what he looks for is the universal at a pre-expressional level. Kolankiewicz focuses on research of all kinds of spectacles or performances, whose basic function is the symbolical managing – acting and experiencing – of metasocial comments. Those are important events, since they gather the people, redefine the tradition and reflect upon social relations and communication with the possibility to renew them. This wide area includes theatre, proto-theatrical festivities, paratheatrical events, ceremonies, carnivals, sport matches etc. The common sign of the participant´s behaviour is performativity.“

Expedition for joik

Three artists went north, to Lapland, in order to be inspired by a phenomenon of joik – a way of singing which cannot be just learned, which must be experienced. This reality becomes unusual, since they are accompanied also by their children and start to see the world through their eyes. A film about Lapland, where singing and landscape cannot exist without each other.

Without any comments or verbal hints, the film as a mosaic of documentary and at the same time „directed“ situations illustrates how the atmosphere of Tuscany exactly fitted the members of Farm in the Cave during their stay in Italy at a workshop by Francis Pardeilhan. Similarly to the phrase „This is…“ denoting anything or anybody, inanimate or animate, this documentary mosaic also stresses those phenomena which – during that stay – bordered on both public and private simultaneously.
